Experience Required. Compensation: Experience.

India's entry-level job market has a deal for freshers: bring 2 years of experience, we'll pay you in exposure. TCJP investigates the scam nobody's investigating.

You cannot gain experience without a job, and you cannot get a job without experience. India solved this puzzle — just do it for free, on a six-month rolling basis, indefinitely.

Somewhere in a LinkedIn post that got 47,000 reactions, a CEO wrote: 'We don't hire for skills. We hire for attitude.' What he did not mention is that the attitude must come pre-loaded with three years of industry experience, proficiency in seventeen enterprise tools, and the financial stability to survive on ₹10,000 a month in Bengaluru. Welcome to the Indian entry-level job market — where the entry costs everything and the level is the floor of a pit.

Sir, I Was 4 Years Old When You Founded This Company

The Indian fresher job listing has become a piece of literary fiction more surreal than anything Manto wrote. 'Entry Level Position. Requirements: B.Tech/MBA from a Tier-1 institute, 2-3 years relevant industry experience, proficiency in Python, SQL, Tableau, advanced Excel, basic German preferred, and a growth mindset.' Compensation: 'Best in industry.' The industry, it turns out, is the internship industry, and the best in it is a ₹5,000 stipend and a certificate you can frame and cry at.

The experience paradox is not a glitch in the system. It is the system. Companies discovered decades ago that if you label exploitation as opportunity, an entire generation will compete for the privilege of being exploited first. Two million engineering graduates enter the market every year in India. The math does not add up, but then again, neither does working for free in exchange for learning and development.

You cannot gain experience without a job, and you cannot get a job without experience. India solved this puzzle — just do it for free, on a six-month rolling basis, indefinitely.

The Compensation Package: Exposure, Learning, and Our Warmest Regards

The unpaid internship in India has been rebranded so many times it deserves its own brand strategy consultant — who will, of course, be unpaid. It is now a 'learning immersion.' A 'pre-placement opportunity.' A 'live project experience.' The fresher works 9-to-7, attends meetings that could have been emails, produces a deck the senior manager presents to the client, and receives in return a handshake and a LinkedIn recommendation that says 'hardworking and eager to learn.' Which is corporate for worked for free and smiled about it.

The ₹8,000 monthly stipend — the great Indian participation trophy — deserves a moment of silence. After deducting PG rent, auto fares, one meal a day that is not Maggi, and the one kurti you bought because the office has a smart-casual dress code, you are left with approximately ₹340 and your self-respect, which is also depreciating. The company, meanwhile, has billed your work to the client at ₹4,500 per hour. This is called the ecosystem.

The Job Description That Launched a Thousand Memes

  • Position: Junior Associate (Entry Level)
  • Experience Required: 2–5 years
  • Qualification: MBA/B.Tech from Tier-1 only — other colleges need not apply
  • Skills: Leadership, ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and a working knowledge of grief
  • CTC: 3 LPA fixed + 'variable component based on performance' (i.e., 3 LPA, fixed)
  • Perks: Free tea, Friday fun activities, and a Diwali bonus of one Amazon voucher worth ₹250
  • Culture: Family environment — you will work like you owe them money, because you do (education loan)

This is not satire. This is a Tuesday on Naukri.com. The TCJP Research Wing — three interns and a WhatsApp group — reviewed 200 entry-level listings last quarter. Sixty-two percent required prior experience. Forty-one percent mentioned competitive salary without specifying a number. Eleven percent listed passion for the industry as a non-negotiable qualification, which is extraordinary because passion does not cover the EMI on your education loan.

How We Got Here: A Brief History of Treating Youth as a Resource to Extract

At some point, the Indian economy decided the correct response to a surplus of educated young people was to make each of them audition harder for fewer jobs at lower wages. This is not a market failure. It is a policy choice dressed in the language of meritocracy. When IIT graduates accept ₹6 LPA jobs because ₹6 LPA is the pragmatic option, it is not because they lack ambition. It is because the floor collapsed and everyone quietly agreed not to mention it at family dinners where the aunty is asking when you will get a real job.

The TCJP platform on the fresher economy is simple: experience is a currency, and we are being robbed of it in broad daylight, in air-conditioned offices, behind a signed NDA so we cannot even complain on Glassdoor without revealing which great-place-to-work-certified company it was. We demand minimum stipend legislation with actual enforcement — not a gazette notification that HR screenshots, ignores, and then forwards the we-are-hiring-go-getters post anyway.

The TCJP Manifesto on Fresher Wages (Abridged, Because We Cannot Afford Paper)

The Cockroach Janta Party hereby resolves: that exposure is not legal tender; that a six-month internship followed by we will keep your profile in view is a crime against the youth; and that any job description requiring more than one year of experience for an entry-level role must be submitted to the Ministry of Please Read the Room for mandatory review. We further resolve to keep meme-ing about this until someone in Parliament must acknowledge that the youth are not lazy — they are correctly priced out of a market that never intended to fairly compensate them in the first place.

Questions, answered.

Why do Indian companies ask for experience in entry-level jobs?

Because they can. With millions of graduates entering the market annually and far fewer quality openings available, employers hold all the leverage. Requiring prior experience filters applications and signals that they expect immediate productivity without investing in your training — the cost of which they have quietly transferred to you and your family.

Is an unpaid internship legal in India?

The legal position is ambiguous and enforcement is near-zero. The Apprentices Act and various state regulations technically provide some protection, but stipends of ₹0–₹5,000 per month remain common — especially in startups and media — where 'the experience is the pay' is presented without irony and accepted without legal consequence.

What is a fair fresher salary in India in 2026?

Cost of living in metros makes anything below ₹20,000 per month functionally poverty-adjacent for someone without family support. Most 'competitive' fresher packages in non-tech sectors land between ₹2.5–4 LPA, which after tax and rent leaves approximately enough for dal-chawal, one streaming subscription, and a carefully rationed amount of dignity.

Why are fresher salary memes so relatable in India?

Because they document a shared, verifiable reality rather than a vibe. The gap between educational investment — years, fees, emotional labour, parental expectations — and the market's opening offer is so wide and so consistent that it has graduated from personal grievance to a recognized genre with its own visual vocabulary.

What can freshers actually do about low salaries and exploitative internships?

Collectively: demand minimum internship stipend legislation with real enforcement, share salary data openly on every platform available, and reject the narrative that accepting bad terms is paying your dues. Individually: negotiate even when it feels audacious, walk away when the math does not work, and remember that their business model depends on you significantly more than they will ever admit in the offer letter.

What does TCJP want for the youth job market?

The Cockroach Janta Party wants legally enforced minimum internship stipends, mandatory transparent salary bands in all job listings, and a formal national acknowledgement that good learning environment, dynamic culture, and exposure are not salary bands. They are decorations on a coffin. We want the number. In the listing. Before the interview.
