Rising temperatures and water shortage made worse by AI data centersss
Google, Meta and Microsoft are planning to build large scale AI data centers across India. These data centers require lakhs if not crores of liters of water to keep them cool while you make studio Ghibli art or write responses to corporate emails. Not only do they require massive amounts of water, the water needs to be of drinking quality. In a country where the common people cannot get drinking water we are going to give it to AI data centers. These data centers also require 100s of Megawatts of energy as well. Because of these data centers the cost of electricity is passed down to the people living near it and not to mention the poor water quality in the region. The amount of energy they require cannot be realistically produced by renewable methods and when most cities in India are facing water shortages already these data centers will only make it worse. The government has postponed plans to retire ageing power plants and approved dozens of new coal-fired plants, in part to meet demand from data centres. Not to mention the contribution to global warming they will cause, currently the 98 of the world's 100 hottest cities are in India due to large scale deforestation and usage of fossil fuels. If you feel this summer is bad, it will only get worse if these data centers are built. Adani group has pitched in 100 billion dollars to build these centers on land forcefully taken from minorities. Google is working with the state government to acquire 480 acres of land across three locations. In Tarluvada, 200 acres earmarked for the project belong to Dalit families who said they are under pressure to sell to the government. They are planning to build data centers near Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Vizag and Mumbai in order to connect the under sea cables from the west coast to the east coast. Most of these cities already have a water crisis but no media outlet is talking about it.
The government, godi media and the ruling class is telling you it will help the Indian economy by generating jobs and they will be powered by renewable energy. They will use the Indian CEO card, by saying our Indian CEOs are bringing development back to India. Mind you Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella are not Indian, they are American billionaires with American citizenship. They do not care about the Indian people and their struggle. You might ask how do I know for sure that these data centers are harmful, because I am part of the brain drain to the USA and I am witnessing first hand the lies around these data centers and the damage they are causing not just to the environment but also the people living near them. There are wide scale protests in the USA against the data centers and most of the projects are getting cancelled due to public pressure. That is why these companies want to build these data centers in India where they are incentivized to build them by providing government subsidies. The CEOs of these companies are saying AI does not need that much water while refusing to make the water consumption data public and also lying through their teeth about the environmental damage they cause. People living near data centers have reported 100-150% increase in their electricity bills, low water pressure as well as dirt brown water coming from their taps. Imagine if these companies are doing this in the USA where the people are protesting, what damage will they do and get away with in India where people are highly misinformed and the government does not care about the public. We need to ask the government, is all this development worth the harm caused in the long run? We need to hold the government accountable. It is a long standing tradition that international companies exploit the Indian workers due to bad labor laws, now they want to exploit our right to clean water as well. The only economic development that will come out of these data centers will be for Ambani and Adani while the public will suffer in extreme heat with no water and high electricity bills.
