Kolkata hawkers are currently facing major eviction drives across key areas like New Market, Howrah, and Sealdah station. Authorities are issuing notices and using bulldozers to clear illegal pavement encroachments to restore pedestrian space. While local traders and commuters welcome the cleared streets, the hawkers are heavily protesting, demanding rehabilitation and alternative spaces to protect their livelihoods.

Hawker eviction without rehabilitation leads to an immediate loss of livelihood for thousands of vulnerable families, pushing them into extreme poverty and severe debt. This sudden financial crisis forces these families to cut back on basic needs, making them unable to afford education for their children or urgent medical healthcare. Additionally, the entire local economy suffers as small-scale farmers and suppliers lose their buyers, while low-income consumers are deprived of affordable food, clothing, and daily essentials. Ultimately, driving away vendors without offering them a legal alternative is highly ineffective, as extreme desperation and the sheer need for survival eventually force them to return to the same spots.
