Human Trafficking in India: Examining Systemic Failures, Accountability Gaps, Corruption, Survivor Trauma, and the Need for Stronger Policy Interventions,

Since beginning my MSW journey at the University of Mumbai, I have worked closely on issues related to human trafficking and the protection of vulnerable populations. Through fieldwork, research, and interaction with survivors, I have come to understand that human trafficking is not merely a crime committed by individuals; it is sustained by systemic failures, lack of accountability, corruption in certain sectors, social indifference, and weak implementation of laws.Despite the large number of trafficking cases reported across India every year, the issue often remains under-discussed in public and political spaces. Survivors, particularly women and girls, endure severe physical, psychological, social, and economic trauma that can affect them for the rest of their lives. Yet their voices frequently remain unheard, and justice is often delayed or denied. As a social work student and activist, I believe that trafficking must be treated as a serious human rights violation rather than just a law-and-order issue. My research seeks to understand the structural factors that enable trafficking and to advocate for stronger accountability, survivor-centred rehabilitation, effective law enforcement, and greater public awareness. Real change requires collective action, political commitment, and recognition of every survivor's dignity, rights, and humanity.
